LITERACY AUDIT - Creating and Implementing a Literacy Action Plan

This ERLC learning opportunity provided district/school leaders with the structure and scaffolding necessary to create and implement LITERACY AUDITS to lead to the development of well designed and effective 3-5 year LITERACY ACTION PLANS.


The LITERACY ACTION PLAN will ultimately support the following goals taken from the Government of Alberta’s Literacy Framework:

- Children begin Grade 1 prepared to learn
- Children meet the acceptable and the standard of excellence on grades 3, 6 and 9 achievement tests
- Students complete high school within five years of entering grade 10

The ACTION PLAN, a living document, will help schools/school districts to initiate, implement and sustain powerful literacy frameworks/programs.

trehearne.JPGMiriam Trehearne has been a classroom teacher, resource teacher, program specialist, coach, Literacy Specialist and University Associate. As a Literacy Specialist, she led a very successful research-based literacy initiative in a large urban school district (156 elementary schools) which focused on 56 high-needs schools. The results have been documented by the University of Calgary and an independent program evaluator. She presently devotes much for her time to researching literacy best practices, presenting to teachers, literacy coaches and school administrators at conferences and writing books and journal articles. She is the author of the Language Arts Kindergarten Teacher’s Resource Book (Nelson Learning Ltd), the 2006 AEP award winning Language Arts Grades 1-2 Teacher’s Resource Book, The Grade 3-6 Teacher’s Resource Book and The Comprehensive Literacy Resource for Preschool Teachers. Miriam has been honoured as a Canada Post 2001 Literacy Educator Finalist.
